Delight in Stories

Saving Størilund

Delight in Stories is a magical six-week adventure sparking children’s imagination through storytelling. It begins with a mysterious message about Størilund, a magical realm where stories come to life, leading to the discovery of Walter Wellibøøt, a gardener who needs help saving his Story Plants. The children, as the ‘Best Storytellers in the World’, embark on a quest to save Størilund. They breathe life into Walter’s last Story Seed by creating, writing, and telling unique stories. Weekly clues and magical ‘artifacts’ appear, guiding their journey as they nurture the seed into a strong Story Plant.

Delight in Stories

A miniature man from a fabled land travels the world to collect stories in hand. When stories are told that truly enchant, a precious seed can grow into a plant. Stories this powerful we want to protect. So the magic and wonder for generations is kept.

The program entails just so much pure imagination and magic really for the children. And it all begins with a very special video clip and it’s from a lady called Cordelia. She also directs us to this website, and the children just absolutely love it. Going forward from then on, we start receiving more video messages and teeny, tiny little letters from Walter himself encouraging the children and that they need to be the best storytellers in the world.

This program for our school has been absolutely fantastic. What it brings to the children is creativity that we simply can’t provide in the day-to-day running of the school. So working with Delight, the expertise they have, the training they provide, and the imagination they bring to the writing topic just makes the curriculum come alive for the children.

So this morning, oh, it was so lovely. The children came into the classroom, and they had discovered that Walter had actually visited their miniature worlds that they made for him. Oh and it was so nice to see them come in. Their smiles were beaming. They were very, very happy.

It was more magical than I expected.

We made little books and there was glitter all over them.

And he left magic and footprints in our boxes.

We have to read to the story plant because, because we want to make it grow to see what will happen.

I’m the best storyteller because I read a lot to the plants.

It was really lovely just to see how excited the children were to write the recount, to write a letter, to write a story. They had more of a purpose to write and we definitely saw a higher level engagement in the boys writing, as that was something that we have found tricky. Boys are more reluctant writers. But this really got all of them writing even the lower attainers that sometimes you think, you know, bless them, they do need a bit more support. They were more independent because they wanted to write. So it was, it was a real joy to see in the classroom.

I’ve seen this new type of excitement on her face whenever she’s been talking about him. Whenever I pick her up, I ask her, oh, tell me one good thing and one not so good thing that happened at school today. A lot of the time, the good thing was about Walter Welliboots. And like anything exciting that he’d done. She seemed genuinely excited. Like, and he came into the classroom, et cetera, et cetera. So, yeah, no, it is, I’ve seen a new lease of life when it comes to school, especially because of Mr Welliboots.

Delight in Stories empowers teachers to create magical cross-curricular experiences, blending storytelling with art, drama, and outdoor learning. It inspires children to write and read, culminating in an open classroom event where they showcase their stories and artwork to their families, leaving a legacy of mystery and imagination within the school.
